Circa 1888-1893 per "Holland & Holland: The Royal Gunmaker" by Dallas. Octagonal barrel fit with a dovetailed bead front sight and three leaf dovetailed rear with one fixed leaf regulated for 50 yards, and two folding regulated for 100 and 150, all with express lines. Top flat with anti-glare matting, with adjacent flats engraved with the 98 New Bond street address, .295 Semi-Smooth nomenclature, and "Winner of all the 'Field' Rifle Trials". Svelte forearm with flat top checkering and horn nosecap. Action with nicely cut acanthus scroll work, "Holland * Holland" and dressed hinge pins. with larger springs of scroll at "recoil shield" and a shell motif where matting meets action. Automatic safety with "SAFE" inlaid in gold ahead of slide, single trigger which is protected by a short tang trigger guard which is fit fit to a more traditional tang that extends approximately 3/4 of the way to the pistol grip cap, which is engraved with scroll en suite. Stock of a dark walnut with sidepanels, checkered in a flat-top point pattern about the wrist, small shadowline cheekpiece, and plain steel buttplate with small teat at heel. The barrel has been opened up and rerifled to an approximate 9mm caliber from the original .295; chamber cast will be required to determine exact cartridge. CONDITION: Very good, showing signs of use in the field. Barrel with a smooth mix of dove grey on sharp edges, plum-blue and smooth chocolate patina interspersed throughout, with heavier wear at the muzzle. Forearm with handling marks throughout and some heavier spots of abrasion to checkering and a professionally repaired splinter at left fang. Stock with scattered handling marks and some thinning to checkering. Action is essentially dove grey wit flashes of case colors, better in protected areas. Mechanically fine, bore very good with some light firing residue.
