25cm (approx. 9 - 13/16") nagasa of classic hira zukuri form. Suguha (straight) hamon with an abundance of nie activity, including inazuma and sunagashi. Boshi with a surplus of hakikake, almost kaen. Jigane (surface metal) is predominantly masame and some mokume and itame. Nakago (tang) is ubu (uncut) with kesho yasurime (filemarks) and signed in two characters "Kunikane". Silver foiled copper habaki, fuchi and kashira with shakudo nanako ground with golden paulownia mons, menuki in the form of dogs. Tsuka-ito silk of a cream color. Gorgeous Japanese cherry wood saya with pattern not dissimilar to American tiger striping. Silver kojiri with floral motifs. Slotted for kozuka and kogai, with kogai depicting a dam holding back water, while kozuka depicts a man leading an ox with a a sheaf of wheat on his back, executed in mixed metals, with man and ox in shakudo, and wheat in gold and brass. Bodies of both pieces executed in brass., rear of kozuka signed, but illegible. In an orange sword bag with floral motifs. CONDITION: Very good, blade in good polish with some superficial scratches and some surface mossing but clean and with clear features throughout. Fuchi and kashira excellent, well executed nanako, tsuka ito with some age related darkening but tight and complete. Saya with some scrapes throughout lacquer but still retaining well over 90%. Kozuka blade with evidence of heavy use, brass bodies of kozuka and kogai with some age related darkening. Sword bag fine. This is a wonderful set with a very pleasing Yamato feel.
