52cm (approximately 20 - 7/16") of the Katakiriba Zukuri form, where the left side is a flat hira zukuri and the right is shobu zukuri. Hamon (temper line) is a well executed thin suguha, with a clear ko-maru boshi on the shobu zukuri side, and more more indistinct, possibly mishina, boshi on hira zukuri side. Surface grain with masame grain throughout and some areas of itame. Utsuri visible throughout both sides. Left side with a horimono of a hatahoko (a halberd with a standard wrapped around it), which the right side is signed "Joushu Kasama Junin Minamoto Masatsugu". Masatsugu, born Hoshiro Takehachiro, worked circa 1864-1865 in Hitachi province and worked for the Makino family of Kasama. This sword has no papers, but Mike Yamasaki has agreed to guarantee the signature if submitted to shinsa through him within 1 calendar year of purchase. Ubu nakago with iriyamagata, almost kengyo, jiri, and with patination that has obfuscated yasurime. Plain copper habaki. CONDITION: Very good, in good polish, with some looseness not uncommon to masame. Some surface scratches, primarily to shobu zukuri side, and some very minor mossing at machi. Shirasaya very good but mekugi does not sit flush. An interesting sword of an unusual shape.
