The barrel is dated 12-12 with SA, bomb and an "A" along with six digit serif serial number, a type 2 high hump with cut out handguard, "SA JFC" cartouche in box for J.F. Coyle, type 1 magazine cut off, straight bolt, a 2700 yard rear sight with knurled dished knobs but no grooves used from 1914, a type 2 split barrel band with swivel used 1905-1918. The finger groove walnut stock has the two reinforcing bolts, the forward bolt used from 1917 forward. The "A" on barrel indicates an Avis replacement or "A" inspected circa 1917. The fully checkered butt plate with trap is type 4. All parts are milled. There are two block letter P proof stamps at wrist base. Metal finish is blue. It would appear that this is an original 1914 that was returned circa 1917-1918 and was updated, most noticeably with the addition of the forward stock reinforcing bolt and updated rear sight. CONDITION. Fine. The receiver retains about 30-40% blue with balance drifted grey. The exposed barrel is a blue patina mix. The bands and floor plate are grey patina. All metal and wood legends or stamps are sharp. The band retaining spring retains most of the niter blue. The stock is superb showing only minor dings / impressions. The bore is strong but frosted. This is an honest pre WWI gun that got some arsenal updates during the first War.
