Circa 1835 per "James Purdey & Sons: Gun and Rifle Makers: Two Hundred Years of Excellence" by Dallas. Bead front sight dovetailed into barrel near muzzle, with a fixed standing leaf V notch rear sight. Engraved "J. Purdey, 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON" over hooked patent breech with silver lines and silver (platinum? unclear) blowout. Underside with matching serial number, CP proof, "JP" barrel maker for James Purdey, truing strike, and Crown V proof. Ramrod retained by a pair of ferrules before feeding into a reinforced mouth. Barrel retained by a single key through an escutcheon engraved with a rope border. Stock with point pattern checkering about the forearm and horn forearm tip. Percussion lock with dolphin form hammer and English stalking safety with light floral scroll and engraving of a reclining stag with "PURDEY" at bar with single side nail. Silver initial oval at top of wrist. Single set trigger protected by a trigger guard with a bounding stag, a long tang with checkered flare, and a shell finial. Checkerered in point pattern about the wrist, with shadowline cheekpiece, sling stud at toe line, and buttplate with long heelplate engraved with another stag. Right handed patchbox with a pair of German shorthair pointers chasing down a boar. Housed in a wooden case with split ring lid, lined in foliage green, with Purdey trade label in lid and accessories comprising loading mallet, bullet mold and sprue cutter, pair nippers, combination nipple wrench and pick with T crossbars hollow for holding turnscrew head, sling, three turnscrews, container of Percussion caps, a lead pour, a handle with a female threaded end for accessories, powder flask, standalone nipple wrench, bullet starter, spare V spring, jag, three part cleaning rod, and a Cogswell and Harrison oil bottle with rangoon oil. CONDITION: Very good as restored. Barrel with the vast majority of the reapplied brown finish with scattered peppering and thinning to silver at high edges. Rebrown has softened legends, but they are still legible. Metal components essentially gunmetal grey throughout, some flashes of blue on trigger guard, with engraving heavily softened by age. Stock has been revarnished with softening to checkering, with scattered handling marks and impressions, but free of cracks or chips. Mechanically fine, bore very good with strong rifling and some mild frosting throughout. Case very good, revarnished with softness to wood. Accessories good to fine with evidence of period use throughout.
