This particular pattern is thought by many scholars to be a product of Louis Froelich's large and efficient sword manufacturing operation at the Confederate States Armory in Kenansville, North Carolina. This example features a pronounced blade with wide fuller that exhibits a gray patina. Brass hilt with 3-branch guard that is warped as the outer branch has been pushed in toward the blade. A standard copy of the 1840 "wristbreaker" heavy cavalry saber with large cone handle that is constructed of wood wrapped with leather and grooved to accommodate a single thick strand of copper wire. Wood grip exhibits various cracks and is missing a piece on obverse side with fragmented leather wrap. This saber features a distinctive Kenansville Pommel, and a similar example can be seen on page 45 of Confederate Edged Weapons by William Albaugh III. Guard exhibits the Roman numerals "XLVI" on wide quillon. Saber is complete with its scabbard that features brass mounts and throat, the latter of which is also marked with the Roman numerals "XLVI". Scabbard exhibits a heavy chocolate patina with defined seam and damaged drag. CONDITION: Attic.
