Due to the US Government not accepting H.E. Leman's proposal for rifles, it is speculated that he only made about 300, which were offered for private sale during 1861-1862. These may have been sold to individuals, or militia units. Features include front sight similar in size to the M1855 Springfield rifled musket (likely for use with the M1855 socket bayonet), basic "V" notch rear sight, large brass nose cap, 2 barrel bands of the M1816 pattern, brass trigger guard, and unmarked brass buttplate. Bolster is of the correct shape, with cleanout screw. Lock is marked "H.E. LEMAN / LANCASTER PA." forward of hammer in gang stamped single block letters. Hammer is of the correct high-spur type, similar to converted M1816s of the period. Trigger guard and forwardmost barrel band are mounted with large circular sling swivels. Complete with full length ramrod, likely the original. CONDITION: Good, with iron assemblies turned a brown patina with an extra preservative layer of finish added. Stock is in matching condition, with burnout evident on both sides of bolster, and professionally executed large repair on bottom flat of stock near trigger guard. Mechanically good, with 2 notches at half and full cock, hammer is loose. Bore is dark.
