Produced under Federal contract during the Civil War by Remington, this unissued condition example remains largely in classic configuration. Rifle is fitted with a rust blued "STEEL" marked barrel proofed and dated "1863" at the breech. Blade front sight and replacement adjustable aperture target rear sight. Case hardened lockplate dated 1863 at the tail with federal eagle motif and Remington address ahead of the cock. Brass mounted walnut stock with patch box retaining spare nipple and worm. Also included is a well fitting "B.H." inspected yataghan saber bayonet with leather scabbard. CONDITION: Excellent as unissued. Barrel retains nearly all of its original blue with light fading, especially at the muzzle. Lock retains strong and rich case colors, fading along the edges where the protective lacquer has flaked off. Brass displays a pleasant golden patina. Stock is also very fine with a rich aged appearance and some expected light dings and scuffs from storage. Mirror bore, very possibly unfired. Bayonet rates very good overall. A very nice example.
