The last time this rifle was offered, the engraving was attributed to Arnold Griebel, who was an engraver in the Chicago area from the 1940s into the 1960s, best known for his game scenes. While unsigned, the work on this rifle is extremely good, with acanthus scroll borders and ribbons supporting vignettes of a pair of foxes playing in the forest on the left, and an alerting pointer on the right. Edges and flats engraved with scroll and stippling en suite. Blued barrel marked "-Pfeifer Rifle Co- / Roscoe, Calif" and is marked ".270 PR / Pfeifer L.A.", presumable for .270/348 Pfeifer Rimmed. Joe Pfeifer was a barrel maker and rifle builder during the 1950s, and was well respected for the quality of his work. Fitted with a Unertl 12x scope on scope blocks. Oversized bench stock with semi-beavertail forearm with modified point pattern checkering and fleur-de-lis intrusions, contrasting forearm tip. Nicely fiddlebacked walnut buttstock checkered in the same pattern about the wrist with teardrop pistol grip cap, oversized cheekpiece, checkered steel buttplate, and sling studs on forearm and at belly of stock. Housed in a Pelican Vault with open box of Speer 130 grain .270 Hot-Cor bullets, 85 .348 Winchester Magnum empty cases, and a set of RCBS dies including a seating die, and a pair of custom dies, one of which appears to be an oversized decapper. CONDITION: Very good, retaining the majority of the custom finishes throughout. Barrel with some scattered handling marks and superficial scratches, some silvering. Unertl very good, clear with crisp reticle. Stock very good with some scattered handling marks and impressions, with a small repaired chip at toe. Mechanically fine, bore excellent with strong rifling. Cases appear to have been reloaded multiple times, but appear serviceable. An interesting rifle.
