27" working half-hull model for "Picket Boat No 1" designed by Captain Charles S. Boggs in 1864 and used by Lt. William B. Cushing in the destruction of the Confederate ironclad Albemarle. Boggs was superintendent of shipbuilding at the New York Naval Yard from 1864-1865. He supervised the building of a fleet of steam picket boats of his own design. Lt. Cushing fitted one of these as a torpedo boat which he used to sink the Albemarle. In original fitted wood case with partial Adams Express Co. label from Washington D.C. The half-hull has pencil annotation on reverse stating it was designed by Boggs. Wood case exhibits various abrasions with partial Navy label on lid. CONDITION: Good.
