A cased American Diplomat uniform that belonged to Charles L. Wilson of Chicago. The group consists of his diplomat sword that features a blade embellished with patriotic motifs. Hilt is of gilt brass and features cross quillon and shell languette with thickly cast spread winged eagle. Eagle head pommel with ivory grip that features checkered decorations. D-guard is attention grabbing with raised portrait of George Washington. Sword is complete with its black leather scabbard that features gilt brass mounts embellished with scroll decorations. Also includes a dress blue jacket with heavy gilt braid and 8 gilt eagle buttons with matching blue pants with gilt stripe, matching white pants with gilt stripe, a cocked fore-and-aft hat with braid, a vest with eagle buttons, 2 suspenders, pair of shoes, and a buckle. Sword and uniform are made by the same firm, Watkins Burlington Street London. All contained in a tinned case labeled "C.L. Wilson". CONDITION: Sword exhibits areas with patina and scattered blemishes with good blade and generous amounts of gilt remaining. Uniform exhibits scattered mothing with stains and tarnishing to white pieces. Charles Wilson was a newspaper owner and prominent Republican supporter of Abraham Lincoln during his first election campaign. He was appointed Secretary to the American legation to the Court of St. James by Lincoln. Wilson was close friends with General Philip Sheridan and William Seward. A very interesting grouping with a near complete uniform.
