The slightly curved single-edged blade has a 9 - 1/4" false edge and clip point. The blade has a wide shallow center fuller and is engraved with gilded "Liberty and Independence" and engraved arm holding a sword on the right side and on the opposite side there are panoplies of arms an "E PLURIBUS UNUM" banner, a patriotic chicken eagle surrounded by 13 stars, and the date 1782, all with gilt finish. The silver hilt features a reverse-P knuckle bow and forward-turned quillon. Backstrap and two-stage pommel cap. Relief-carved ebony grip with silver ferrule at base. CONDITION: Dry and untouched. Blade retains most of its gilt wash on the engraving. Traces of bright blue but mostly a brown patina, heavy in some areas. Scattered areas of older heavy rust. Hilt retains a very dark patina. Grip very good with some minor chipping where knucklebow intersects with pommel. A very attractive early and patriotic silver-hilted horseman's saber.
