The stagecoach treasure box is one go the most iconic Gold Rush era antiques associated with early California and the Westward expansion. This example bears the correct makers stencil inside lid "MANUFACTURED BY / J.Y. AYER / 3740 SEVENTEENTH S / S. F. CAL." Also visible inside the lid is a trace of an express label in the upper right hand side and the period-correct hemp securing rope. Period forged iron hinges and reinforcement brackets appear to be original. This example retains the pressed leather side straps that were prone to breakage, so rare to see them present. Drop shadowed company lettering "WELLS FARGO/ & CO." is at about 60%. Also included is a marked "WF&CO" lock with key. CONDITION: Good overall with honest moderate to heavy period wear.
