Josiah Taylor is listed in "Connecticut Mean in the Revolutionary War" as enlisting as a private in Captain Marvin's Company of the 5th Connecticut Regiment of Militia on October 24th, 1776, through November 26th, 1776. He is also listed in Captain Dorrance's Company between January 1st and December 31st, 1781. He likely saw service between these listed dates as well. The horn measures about 12" overall across the bow. The spout section terminates in a scalloped edge, followed by a tapered round section and a relief scalloped and punch dot decorated transition into the main body. The horn is neatly inscribed "Josiah Taylor his horn, 1776". The horn is decorated throughout with engraved foliate and vine designs and with a full bodied lion-like creature with a three-pronged spiked tail, sharp long claws, and a human-like face. Original convex wood plug retains by wooden pins, later screw in center. CONDITION: Retains a very pleasing honey patina and shows some light carry wear. A couple minor insect nips. Wood plug has its original surface. A very attractive early Revolutionary War powder horn.
