According to DAR record 57696, Captain Abner Robinson was born in Windham, Connecticut, in 1738 and he died in 1815. He was ensign in 1775 in the 4th Connecticut company, and was then promoted to lieutenant of the 7th Company. In 1776 he rose to the rank of Captain. In 1777, he is listed as commanding a Rhode Island Company of State Troops. In 1778, he is listed as serving under Colonel Samuel McClellan. This attractive horn measures about 11" across the bow. The spout is fluted deeply and terminates with a scalloped ring. The main body has a scalloped edge and is engraved around the base "DATED CROWN POINT OCT. Ye 31st 1759" / ABNER RObINSON" with a map of New York with many labelled locations. Some depicted are Albany, Schenectady, New York City, Long Island, Amboy, Fort Edward, and many other smaller abbreviated forts. There is also an engraved dragon in flight, a peacock, a mermaid, florals, and cities in detail. Original convex wood plug retained by wood pins. Iron staple at base of horn for strap attachment. CONDITION: Retains a dark patina and has a coating of finish. Shows some scattered scratches from carry wear. A very nice French and Indian War American map horn.
