One of the largest and most appealing Revolutionary War era cavalry sabers extant, this sword has a large spiral bone grip of 4 - 5/8”. The generous gilt-washed D-shaped guard is one continuous piece running from an integral loop mounted around the grip at the top and down the knuckle bow and forming a slotted counterguard that is pierced with a single cross bar to make four slots. The blade is blacksmith made with a single irregular fuller. It is embellished with a small rococo floral design that adds a bit of art to the simplicity and practicality of the overall design. CONDITION: Very good. Excellent and pleasant aged patina to the bone and metal. Blade retains a brown patina, cutting edge is slightly bent about 12" from tip. The parts are solid with very little movement. Some traces of wear to the gilt wash of the guard.
