Late 18th century. Authentic examples such as this one is are exceedingly rare. This fine pistol features 4 octagon barrels with flared cannon muzzles and inscriptions on the top flats of each: "Presented to / Simon Mctavish / on his 21st birthday / by his family" and the barrels are numbered 0, 1, 2, and 3 on breeches. The silver scalloped boxlock action has a single pan and touchhole. One side engraved "Michael / Berleur". The other side is fitted with an iron belt hook retained by two screw. Trigger guard is also iron. Bottoms of breeches and barrels have indistinct proofs and massive breech extension is engraved with dolphins, a small boat, and man carrying a barrel. The reinforced cock has a sliding half-cock thumb safety. Checkered walnut grip with silver wire-inlaid spine and relief oval panels on each side inlaid en suite. There is a Simon McTavish who lived between 1750 and 1804. He lived in Montreal and born in Scotland and was a prominent fur trader. In addition, he was the chief founding partner of the North West Company. He was a member of the Beaver Club and was known as the "Marquis" because of his position in the fur trade and his refined style of living. CONDITION: The original presentation inscription shows light and appropriate wear. The silver surfaces were polished years ago and are turning to pewter. Some wear to engraving on underside and some scattered marks from use. Action functions properly. Grip shows wear, an age crack on left side stemming from action and some smoothed gouges as bottom on right side. A very rare and desirable authentic oddity. PROVENANCE: The Private Collection of James Harrison Ring.
