Joseph Valet was contracted to make muskets and fusels for the French army spanning three different models. The barrel, lock, trigger guard, and ramrod ferrules are from one of Valet's French Model 1728 muskets. Barrel has two proofs on the left side of the breech. Lock engraved "J. VALET / A LIEGE" in center. Buttplate appears to be from a Dutch Model 1710 musket. The cherry stock displays early form, showing heavy French influence. The left side, opposite the lock, is neatly carved "PP". It is believed that this is an early Pennsylvania Property mark, perhaps before the stamps were made. CONDITION: Barrel retains a dark brown patina, some pitting towards breech. Lock functions properly, frisson, frizzen screw and top jaw screw are modern replacements. Pan and lockplate show some heavier pitting, partially obscuring markings. Stock shows scattered cracks, minor losses and marks from use. Finish original, period ramrod.
