This musket is composed of very early Dutch parts from two muskets and displays early New England form. The two-stage Dutch barrel has a brass half moon front sight and a bayonet lug mounted on top, closer to the muzzle. The early Dutch 1740 banana lock is engraved "CORB---(Corbeau) / A MAASTERICH". The buttplate and ramrod ferrules are brass and from a Dutch Model 1740 musket. The iron trigger guard is from a Dutch 1710 Model iron-mounted musket, as ordered by the colony of South Carolina in the mid-18th century. Tiger maple stock is highly figured and of early New England Roman nose form, relief carved and fluted apron around barrel tang. CONDITION: Barrel retains a grey patina and is coated with lacquer which has yellowed. Lock retains a dark brown patina and functions well. Brass retains a mustard patina and triggerguard has a dark brown patina. The stock shows scattered minor losses and several grain separation cracks and age cracks. Ramrod is period.
