Lot consists of: (A) A M1902 officer's sword with an interesting history. The sword is in standard configuration and exhibits a presentation on the scabbard that reads "PRESENTED / To Major Dorothy Russell O'Reilly / As a token of esteem by the enlisted personal of Troop H / First Penna Cav / August 15, 1917". Dorothy has an interesting and confusing history, as she was the daughter of Lillian Russel and Edward Solomon. Dorothy appears to be known for her sensational hijinks, divorces, and legal fights. She tried to succeed as a vaudeville performer and was married seven times, often appearing in records with different names. She does not appear to have military service so the rank of "major" may be honorary. She was married to Edward F. O'Reilly at the time of the presentation. Their marriage lasted only two or three years. There is some documentation about her life that accompanies the sword but it is incomplete as she has an elusive past. The blade is bright with light oxidation. Scabbard finish exhibits some peeling with wear around the presentation, but it remains legible. CONDITION: Good. (B) Trench art cane crafted from .50 caliber bullet shells. Nice patina with scattered blemishes. CONDITION: Good.
