According to page 164 of "The Scottish Pistol" by Martin Kelvin, Alexander Campbell, who worked between 1730 and 1750, was the second generation of his family to work in Doune in the gunmaking trade. He was responsible for 25 pistols in the survey of known pistols by Scottish makers. Of classic form with four-stage barrel with flared faceted muzzle and engraving throughout. The all-steel ramshorn butt stock is profusely engraved en suite. There are extensive silver-inlaid geometric designs on the back of the grip. The lock is signed "Alexr Campbell" in script. Faceted pan with no exterior bridle and cock of early form. Engraved silver ball trigger and touchhole pick. Silver oval escutcheons on both sides of the grip, both engraved with the Douglas Clan crest and motto. The motto engraved around top is "JAMAIS ARRIERE" meaning "Tender and true" or "Forward". Below the motto is a salamander on a chapeau surrounded by fire. There are three silver inlaid and engraved bands on the bottom of the stock, one behind the trigger and two in front. Pierced and engraved steel belt hook on left side of stock. Classic turned steel ramrod. CONDITION: All steel components retain a pleasing grey patina with excellent engraving. Lock function properly. Silver ball on pick a possible replacement. Small repair to front of ramrod ferrule. Silver escutcheons show some light wear to centers. A very nice pistol with identified crest.
