For a similar example with this form see plate I on page 111 of "The Scottish Pistol" by Martin Kelvin. Circa 1715-1725. Rare solid brass barrel of classic form with extensive scroll engraving incorporating traditional Scottish designs marked on top with registration number "9K-5 1265". Steel stock of early ramshorn butt form with scroll engraving throughout. Pierced and engraved belt hook on left side of stock with a gadrooned section. Early cock with pierced star cock comb or post finial, partially visible signature "WM / ST----", probably for early and scarce maker William Steward. Early pan without exterior bridle. Engraved silver ball trigger and touchhole pick on butt. Single long tube ramrod ferrule. Replaced ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel retains a pleasing mustard patina and shows some wear. Stock shows heavy wear to engraving. Small hole on right side just above rear ramshorn, which is original but has been re-attached. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration and functions well. Replaced touchhole pick. Belthook original but ramrod a replacement. A very early and rare pre-Culoden pistol. PROVENANCE: Previously sold as lot 1543 on October 25, 2012 at Little John's Auction.
