According to provenance with these pistols, John Montague found one of the pistols at the Baltimore Gun Show in about 1980 as he recognized that his friend Joe Kindig owned a matching pistol. They were reunited after a negotiation and went to John's collection, where they remained until 2022, when sold as lot 3381 in Sale 114 in Spring, 2022. The pistol that Kindig owned is pictured as plate 167 on page 55 of "Thoughts on the American Flintlock Pistol" by Sam E. Dyke. The pistols feature two-stage barrels with scroll engraving on top of breeches. The flat Germanic lockplates have beveled edges and molding at tails. Both pistols feature engraved heart-shaped inlays on both sides of forends above ramrod entry ferrules. Silver oval-shaped wrist escutcheons with scroll engraving. Otherwise furniture is plain brass, pommel caps have long tangs that extend nearly to wrist escutcheons. Both stocks of partially figured tiger maple with Northampton County form, both carved with incised scrolls around barrel tangs. CONDITION: Barrels retain a light brown surface with scattered light pitting, one shows more wear to breech engraving. Both locks are professionally reconverted, one does not hold on cock and both locks retain a darker grey surface. One lock is a replacement. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina, silver retains a pewter patina. Stocks have much original Lehigh violin finish, show some chips, age cracks and marks from use. One wrist with a repaired break. A very attractive pair of Lehigh pistols.
