Samuel Baum has been recognized as one of the earliest and finest gunsmiths of the Upper Susquehanna School of Kentucky rifle makers. He is listed as working between 1789 and 1840 in Danville and New Berlin, Northumberland Co. This fine and attractive circa 1790-1810 pistol features a two-stage barrel with incised line at muzzle and relief ring between sections. The top flat is inscribed "SB" for Samuel Baum. Plain brass furniture and silver oval wrist escutcheon. Fine highly figured tiger maple stock of attractive form with cane grip. CONDITION: Barrel retains a light grey patina, some pitting around touchhole. Lock retains a grey patina, functions well and is in its original flintlock configuration. Old repair to neck of cock. Brass retains a pleasing mustard patina. Stock has a beautiful orange color and shows fa ew scattered marks from use. One tiny chip professionally repaired above lockplate tail. A very attractive signed Kentucky pistol by a desirable maker. PROVENANCE: Ex. John Persing Collection.
