Circa 1856 hand colored lithograph by Nathaniel Currier “The Last War-Whoop”, a companion to “The Pursuit”, shows the conclusion to a dramatic chase. The Native American warrior, who has now been shot and knocked from his horse, looks up at the frontiersman, still mounted though his leg has been pierced by an arrow. Both prints were unusual for Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait, an English-born artist who never ventured west of Chicago. He often portrayed Native Americans at a distance, with little detail, due to never encountering them himself. In this work, Tait placed the Native American in the foreground and provided more detail than usual, including a painted face and decorated buckskin clothes. The lithograph is matted and framed with some fading to the colors and areas of foxing. CONDITION: Good.
