The "Pointed Tree" carver or artist was a prolific and unknown engraver of powder horns in the mid-18th century. His work is identifiable by the paintbrush shaped trees shown on his horns. This massive supply size horn measures about 16" across the bow. The horn feature bright polychrome reds and browns. The tapered spout section has a ring at the mouth and three relief rings farther down. The main body features a massive British crest. The map is labelled "A MAP / OF AMERICA". The top of the map begins with "MONTREAL" and "SAINT LORANCE REVER" as well as "SAINT JOHN" and "LAKE CHAMPLAN" on the other side. Important locations include ships on Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and an arrow engraved in the middle of Lake Onyda. Some of the forts shown are: Crown Point, Ticonderoga, Miller, Edward, George, Ontario, Stanwix, Schuyler, Harmon, Henrick, Hunter, and others. There is a vacant owner's cartouche as well. Carrying strap flange with two holes still present. Original flat wood plug. CONDITION: Horn retains a pleasing dark honey patina. Polychromes are still quite vibrant. Scattered insect nips. Older gouge towards base. Some chipping to rings below spout. Some chips missing on wood plug. A very attractive and large map horn.
