US Army commission signed by Ulysses Grant appointing James R. Shortelle to "Second Lieutenant in the Eleventh Regiment of Infantry". The commission is dated June 12, 1871, and is also signed by Secretary of War William Belknap. James E. Shortelle was born in 1849 and attended West Point Military Academy, graduating in 1871. He passed away shortly after on August 5, 1871. His brother Robert E. Shortelle was KIA at Gettysburg while fighting with 35th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. The commission was stored folded and exhibits heavy fold lines. The ink has slightly faded but remains legible. Scattered light blemishes with nice edges. An attractive document. CONDITION: Good.
