Late 18th or early 19th century. For a similar example with this form, see plate 69 on page 72 of John Wallace's "Scottish Swords and Dirks". Straight single-edge blade with deeply fluted partial fuller and 5" double-edge, scalloped spine. One side stamped "YOUNG". The hilt is in the form of a thistle with classic woven knot basketwork carving and silver tack decoration. Engraved silver guard mount and pommel cap. Top of cap inscribed "GS". Silver mounted brown leather scabbard with original matching fork and knife set. CONDITION: Blade retained a grey patina with some frosting and scattered light pitting. Handle shows some light wear and relief wood right below pommel cap has some chipping. Mounts retain a grey pewter patina, pommel cap shows some heavy denting and wear. Scabbard shows losses to surface and crazing, cracks on both sides just above accessory mount for knife. Scabbard mounts show some denting and wear, tip of bottom mount bent. It is a very nice, complete, and signed Scottish dirk.
