First quarter of the 18th century, in the manner of John Simpson the younger of Glasgow. For another example decorated in this same manner, see plate 26 on page 38 of "Scottish Swords and Dirks" by John Wallace. Wide double-edged blade with short fuller at top on both sides, inside fuller stamped with series of Latin words and Roman numerals in block letters. The pierced and filled basket hilt retains much of its original Japanning with gilt designs on top throughout, imitating silver or gold inlay on fine examples of the period. Many edges are filed with scalloping and pierced designs feature hearts and circles. Domed pommel japanned and gilded in the same fashion. Modern leather liner and shagreen wrap on grip. CONDITION: Blade retains a mostly spotted brown patina, some areas of pitting and some losses to cutting edges due to pitting, markings worn, rounded tip. Hilt retains about 50-70% original japanning and gilt, other areas turned to brown patina. One break to top branch on left side. A very nice sword.
