Circa 1750-60. This sword features a double-edged tapered blade three partial fullers at the top on both sides, partially visible "FERARA" on one side and indistinct lettering on other. Both sides stamped with maker's mark of double cross with circle at top. Attractive full basket hilt with finial quillon. Left side of hilt has a large oval ring that appears on some swords throughout the 18th century. This feature, according to John Wallace's "Scottish Swords and Dirks", is most likely that it denotes a horseman's sword. A horseman could shorten rein without letting go of his sword, as the oval opening allows a loop of the reins to be held in his left hand to be caught by a finger of his right. The sword also has the unusual feather of the loops in front of the guard being separate from the hilt and retained by three screws. Convex pommel with no capstan. Shagreen-wrapped grip decorated with two strands of twisted brass wire, one thin and the other thick. Turk's head know at base off grip. CONDITION: Hilt tight to blade. blade retains a light patina with scattered dark spots and some nicks to edge. Hilt retains a the same grey patina, dark heavier patina on inside of hilt. Grip shows some wear, turk's knot ferrule missing at top.
