Circa 1750-1770. For another example of a similar hilt, see plate 44 of "Scottish Swords and Dirks" by John Wallace. For an additional example, see plate G18j on page 174 of "British Basket-Hilted Swords" by Cyril Mazansky. The straight single-edged British blade has two fullers on each side. The top of the blade on the left side is stamped with indistinct maker's marks. Leather washer at top of blade. Hilt composed of oval sections with cross patterns within spade-shaped quillon. Separate heart-pierced forward guard attached with three screws. British bun pommel with integral capstan. Sword retains most of its original red wool liner with interior leather liner. Shagrin-wrapped grip decorated with three strands of twisted copper wire and Turk's head knot ferrules at both ends. Complete with its original black tooled leather scabbard with steel mounts. CONDITION: Blade shows some wear, retains a smoothly pitted grey patina, last 1/8" tip slightly bent. Hilt has been somewhat cleaned and is pitted throughout. Liner shows tears, staining and moth holes. Right side of leather lining deteriorated. Grip original and shows some separation, wrap slightly loose. Hilt tight to blade. Scabbard shows some crazing and losses to surface. stitching intact and mounts have been cleaned. A very nice original basket hilt with scabbard.
