This supply horn (for a fortification or artillery) with US stamped in the body is an exceedingly rare example of a Continental Army ownership mark on a powder horn. The mark is essentially identical to another example published in Rex Kessler’s Continental Arsenal Marks and Stamps (pages 123-124) – with the same size (approximately 3/8” and 27 point), font, seraphs, and likely struck by the same die. The architecture of this horn also matches the published example, with the same turned plug with a screw base plug. Like that horn it also has the shadow of a leather suspension very close to the one evident in the other example. Far scarcer than surcharges on muskets, this is an exceptionally rare opportunity at a US surcharged powder horn. CONDITION: Overall excellent condition with still tightly fitting plug and screw plug. Some expected small bug holes. The body of the horn is a bright yellow color, either from storage in low oxygen conditions or from some cleaning.
