Die-struck pewter, 4 13/16 x 3 1/8 inches. This is the finest example known of an 1812 Pattern Infantry cap plate; unexcavated, it was found in an antique shop in Camden, New Jersey by Duncan Campbell in the 1950s. The 16th Infantry was raised and headquartered right across the Delaware River in Philadelphia, until they marched to the Niagara frontier. It was Duncan's favorite cap plate from the War of 1812 (mine too!). Discussed and illustrated in: Campbell and O'Donnell (2004), p, 52. PROVENANCE: J. Duncan Campbell Collection until 2009; purchased as lot 3504 at Bonhams, 2 JUN 2009. CONDITION: Very good; complete, a bright pewter grey tone.
