Although wide-loomed, this blanket bears none of the trademark features of the commercially-produced rose blankets for the trade market and was most likely hand-loomed in America, as opposed to machine-loomed by water power as with most British commercial blanketing of the period. It is approximately 68 inches wide by 80 inches in length, and plain-wove with a finer yarn that the other example in this sale; it also shows little evidence of fulling, if any. There are roses worked in brown and buff-yellow yarn in the upper right and left corners, the other two corners plain, with an "E*R" worked in brown yarn just above the rose in the upper left corner. CONDITION: Overall good, with a random, light scattering of insect nips and one 3x13 inch stain along the lower edge (opposite the rose ends) at center. Each cut end is blanket-stitched.
AN EARLY AMERICAN ROSE BLANKET OF 8/4 SIZE, 1750-1820.
