These bags are accompanied by multiple tags identifying them to Capt. Grant. The earliest is a 5 - 1/4” by 2 - 3/4” shipping tag from the E.S. Brown Company in Fall River, Massachusetts, with the inscription written in pencil “Capt E Grant”. It is interesting to note the source of the tag as the Captain was from Fall River and is also buried there. The next tag is a 3” by 2 - 1/2” manila tag with the inscription written in ink "Civil War Saddle Bags used by Capt Grant Co C 3 Regt MVM -1862-." The next tag is a small, worn price tag style tag that appears to be a collection inventory tag with faint writing “CW Saddle Bags used by Capt Grant Co C 3 Regt MVM 1862”. The last tag was affixed by the last collector who owned these saddle bags and was merely copying the same information on the other tag. Research shows Grant listed as the commanding officer of Company C, 3rd Massachusetts, Volunteer Militia in the 1863 Annual Report of the Adjutant General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. CONDITION: Very good. Bags have supple leather, intact seams, complete outer flaps and closing closing straps with solidly attached buckles. All the interior pouches are complete. Gussets are intact, smooth and pliable, with a small wear spot. Surface shows some minor crazing.
