Lot consists of two Civil War southern broadsides with military and pro-slavery content. (A) North Carolina anti-Emancipation Proclamation September 1862 broadside by Bryan Tyson of Browers Mills, North Carolina, who had opposed secession and the war. Long, three-column letter denouncing Lincoln for the Emancipation Proclamation, urging he be deposed and a renewed southern offensive made to secure a more favorable, negotiated peace. CONDITION: Excellent. (B) Volunteers Wanted! Southern recruiting broadside just before the outbreak of war looking for 50 men to join Co. A 101st Virginia Militia in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, “to defend Virginia from the Abolitionists of the North…” with a January 1861 declaration to citizens of the county at bottom. CONDITION: Poor to Fair. Tears at right and lower edges, vertical tape stain, scattered water stains, but a very scarce southern broadside foreshadowing four bloody years to come.
