Lot consists of five pre-Civil War items with political association. (A) Large composite albumen copy photograph of images of the Charlestown City Guard, who attended Buchanan’s March 1857 inauguration. 72 images including two of a commemorative medal: 70 officers and men, all identified, 68 shown seated in uniform with white crossbelts, etc., and shako on the table beside them, six officers with swords. Originals likely ambrotypes, set in a frame, perhaps displayed in the company’s armory, with these copy images given to individual members. CONDITION: Very good. Loss to upper left of mount, not affecting images or caption. (B) Old Colony Reporter Extra!! November 1859 three column broadside addressed to voters of North Bridgewater, supporting the Free Soil party candidates in the Massachusetts elections, with discussion of slavery, union with the Democratic party, etc. CONDITION: Excellent. (C) Register and Examiner Extra October 1840. Pro-Harrison and Tyler broadside attacking Van Buren, Democrats and the “Locofoco” faction and urging one more push at the polls. Nice Harrison and Tyler eagle at top center. CONDITION: Fair to good. Folds and stains, with loss at lower right, but little text missing. (D) Chester County Times Extra Oct. 10, 1860. Lincoln/Hamlin Republican presidential ticket at upper left. Celebrates Curtin’s election as Pennsylvania Governor with vote totals, etc. CONDITION: Very good. Minor stains. (E) Carrier’s Address. New Year 1843 newspaper carrier greeting to “Patrons of the Sentinel & Witness,” Middletown, Connecticut. Two column poem referencing events of the past year- politics, fashion, etc., including the Amistad slaveship case, Botts and Clay, Van Buren, Whigs in Ohio and New York, etc. as well as Morse and the telegraph, Charles Dickens, etc. CONDITION: Very good. Scattered small foxing with two broader bands near folds.
