Lot consists of four items. (A) Judge Woodward on the War. Attack on GW Woodward, PA supreme court judge, politician, and 1863 Democratic candidate for Governor with decidedly nativist views. CONDITION: Excellent. Very minor foxing. (B) Conservative Union Mass Convention. Advertising a pro-McClellan rally in Chicago with poems and songs supporting the candidate. CONDITION: Excellent. Two small stains at left. (C) “My Old Arm.” Lyrics to wartime sentimental, patriotic song “Dedicated to Our Country’s Wounded Veterans.” A wounded soldier says farewell to his amputated arm, willing to sacrifice it so the Union similarly lost no states. CONDITION: Good. Tear at upper left. Folds and stains. (D) Humorous Natchitoches Union Extra, April 1864, printed by members of the 3rd Mass Cavalry after taking of the city by Union Gen. A.L. Lee, commander of Banks’ cavalry division in the ultimately disastrous Red River Campaign. Col. J.S. Brisbin, Lee’s “acting head of cavalry” is cited as the editor: the former editor had “absconded with the Confederate forces” on their arrival the night before. Pro-Union and satirical content: a report “from our special artist” (“Crayon”) mocking the appearance and orderliness of Confederate cavalry who attempted a stand at Old River the day before, etc. At upper left is a serious proposed ticket with Gen. Banks for President to replace Lincoln. A Massachusetts politician and pre-war Governor, his 1864 military failure helped end those prospects. CONDITION: Excellent. Minor stains. Pencil inscription at top to Wm. McCall at New Orleans from Col. J.S. Brisbin, A.L. Lee’s acting head of cavalry, and noted as the paper’s new “editor” at top left.

Item Dimensions: Largest: 31" x 25"
