This musket has more Revolutionary War brands and stamps than are usually found on American used weapons. The unmarked, slightly shortened barrel retains its bayonet lug. The "Charleville" marked lockplate on this musket has a large and early "US" stamped on the tail. All of the iron furniture is standard Model 1774. The walnut stock is branded "JP", the initials of Superintendent Joseph Perkin, on the right side of the butt. These initials indicate that it was repaired at the Continental Factory/Arsenal in Philadelphia. There is also a "US" brand and several unknown engraved American initials are present on the buttstock. On the bottom of the butt, behind the trigger guard, "UNITED:STATES" is boldly and deeply branded. This is the first stamp used by the Continental Army as ordered by General Washington in 1777. CONDITION: As found and untouched, showing an extended period of use. Period modifications and losses to stock. All iron components have a brown patina with light surface rust. Markings excellent. A rare study piece of untouched American history.
