Very attractive and fun original Hotchkiss cannon as manufactured by Hotchkiss, Paris and so marked on original data plate (in French) on center trail of original steel carriage. Serial number 133. This 2-pounder cannon has been converted to centerfire and includes one brass case display round with neither powder nor primer. Tube measures just over 46” long muzzle to breech. Muzzle to end of trail is 82”. Wood spoke wheels with brass hubs and steel tires are 38” high. Width hub to hub 42”. Brass rear sight and steel front sight present and in fine operating condition. CONDITION: Overall appearance and finish is fine original finish with a superficial brown patina on barrel that should clean up well with appropriate effort. Wooden wheels are extremely fine with fine albeit pitted black painted steel tires. Mechanics are fine. Bore has very good rifling with some pitting. Breech block is fine, turned a brown patina. This cataloger was able to move this cannon around with ease. An attractive and very portable 19th-century cannon. A fine collectible specimen that would be a lot of fun at the range. JWK 2024-12-72.
