This is an interesting gun. The serial number on the receiver is 2890. According to the Hepburn book by Tom Rowe, on page 409, shows this gun as a Long Range Creedmoor with a 32" barrel, Rigby flats, in 44 - 2 4/10". The barrel and forearm are number 8026 which is recorded on page 451 as a .32-40 in a 26" part octagon barrel. Under the barrel is now stamped "38-55" along with stamp of George W Gemmill, Troy, New York, who was a custom gunsmith until he died in 1914. It would seem that George obtained the barrel & forearm of rifle number 8026, rechambered to .38-55 and put them together with the receiver and stock from the number 2890 long range model listed. Gun features the heavy octagon barrel with the Remington Arms barrel legend. The barrel is 28" with recessed crown. It sports a spirit level globe front sight but not the same as one pictured in book on page 379. The short staff Vernier sight with 2" elevation is pictured on page 381. Other features include a nickel plated Swiss butt plate. The finely figured American walnut stock with checkered round knob with roll over cheek piece. The forearm has same checkering pattern and tone with nickel forearm cap. CONDITION: Excellent. As custom built prior to 1914, the barrel is a butter smooth plum blue patina blend with sharp barrel legend. Receiver retains nearly all the case color on both sides, some toning. Breech block is nitre blue. Stock is excellent, sharp checkering with minor impressions and handling. Forearm is in commensurate condition. Action works fine. Bore is bright.
