Designed as a pistol carbine for use with mounted troops, just 4,021 were made, many seeing hard service in the West with the 1st and 2nd Cavalries. This heavily used example is dated "1855" on the tang with standard proofed barrel. Fixed blade front sight and 3-leaf rear. "1856" dated percussion lock with Maynard tape priming system, the tape primer cover door no longer present. Stocked in walnut with brass mounts. No ram rod present. CONDITION: Fair, as found condition. Iron components have developed an honest chocolate patina with oxidation spotting. Brass has a mottled mellow patina. Stocks are age darkened with impressions throughout and a 3 - 3/4" split between the lock and barrel band. Heavily abraded, oxidized bore. Action operates correctly. Hammer developing a crack.
