Manufactured circa 1864 as the Civil War raged. The standard blued octagon barrel is stamped on the top flat with the correct large size 2-line address and a restamped, nonmatching "6572" serial number. "6572" is also hand stamped on both sides on the lower tang in addition to the original serial number. Rifle sports a tapered German silver blade front sight and 1000 yard graduated ladder rear. Full length magazine tube with large brass follower and forward sling bar with ring. Matching "279" assembly numbers observed on the loading gate and barrel underneath. Iconic later contour brass frame stamped on the lower tang with a very unusual "E" inspection stamp. The walnut stock is an older retrofitted replacement of nicely figured walnut with some cast and a rear sling swivel. The unnumbered rounded heel style brass butt plate is affixed with some filler added to fit the stock contour. Screws are replacements. CONDITION: Good. Barrel displays a mottled dark patina with some high edge silvering. Receiver has a pleasant mellow golden patina with scattered dings from use. Stock fits somewhat poorly and has been cleaned and reoiled with scattered impressions remaining throughout. A repaired split present at the toe. Dark bore with defined rifling and some black powder abrasion, especially in the grooves. Fine mechanics.
