In 1984 Gale McMillan formed G. McMillan & Co. to produce precision rifles largely for military contracts and competition, having already been a pioneer in fiberglass marksmen stock production since 1973. In 1987 the company was acquired by investors and reorganized as Harris Gunworks. According to correspondence with McMillan's son Kelly, the company produced sniper rifles for Seal Team Six, as well as target rifles for the Navy shooting team. This very scarce example of a Navy shooting team long range magnum rifle is constructed on a nonsleeved Remington 700 action with a heavy profile satin stainless barrel hand stamped "MCMILLAN" and "300 WIN. MAG." at the breech. Rifle is currently mounted with its original Weaver T16X scope with duplex reticle, serial number 332970. The included "WEAPON RECORD BOOK" records this scope by serial number. Provisions for iron sights are also present. The aperture front sight with level and spare apertures, as well as the Redfield Palma rear sight, are included. Rifle is bedded in a heavy black painted fiberglass target stock with alloy accessory rail, adjustable comb, and adjustable butt pad. A handstop labeled "USN" on the underside in marker is also included. Rifle and accessories are housed in period aluminum transit case with the matching serial number stenciled on. The record book first records this rifle as zeroed on 3/24/87 with additional entries for adjustments and various 600 yard and 1000 yard competitions through August of 1987. In total just 267 rounds were fired. The gun is next recorded by an included 1989 dated inspection tag, remaining in storage until 2002. An included copy of a requisition document records this rifle as being shipped from NAVSURFWARCENDIV to David Vinkler in November of 2002. He was awarded this rifle as a Secretary of the Navy Trophy Rifle for his First Individual Score (195-6) at the 2002 Wimbledon Cup 1000 yard match. According to the consignor only 2 such McMillan Long Range rifle sets have been awarded as Trophy Rifles. CONDITION: Very Good. Barrel retains the vast majority of its original finish with some scuffs. Stock paint likewise shows heavy handling in line with competition use. Mirror bore. Smooth mechanics. Glass has some spotting. Case shows transport and storage wear with a broken handle. A fantastic, documented and nearly impossible to find early US used G. McMillan target rifle.
