Bill Scagel knives are recognized as being the some of the most desired custom cutlery ever made and Camp Axes crafted by his hand are rarely ever encountered, much less offered for public sale. This example is approximately 12 - 7/8" overall. It features Scagel's renowned Kris stamps with Scagel’s name stamp "W. SCAGEL / HANDMADE" in small lettering on the reverse cheek. The blade is bright and exhibits evidence of an older cleaning with scattered blemishes. Small brass guard with single downturned quillon. Stacked leather washer grip with red, black, silvered, and aluminum spacers. Large shaved antler pommel retained by a brass pin on each side. The handle exhibits wear with patina and scattered blemishes. The axe is complete with its brown leather scabbard that features a stitched and brass riveted border. The scabbard's snap enclosure is marked "CROWN". Belt loop is intact. There are gaps in some of the stitching. Scabbard remains supple overall with scattered scuffs and scratches. A great example of rare Scagel cutlery. CONDITION: Very good. This hatchet was obtained at Scagel's property by John Gordon Breland, who was a policeman in Muskegon, Michigan. Upon his retirement, he did odd carpentry jobs, one of which was expanding Scagel's home or workshop. Breland was a lifelong hunter and selected these items from what Scagel had on hand in his shop.
