This carbine was one in a shipment of 50 carbines sent to the Northwest Mounted Police and shipped on April 23, 1884, order number 11518. The accompanying Winchester letter confirms this order number and shipping date, listed simply as a carbine with Spanish meter rear sight. This gun is also furnished with a research letter from D. J. Klancher, inspector, where he evaluates this carbine for the Mounted Police Research and Consulting firm. This example does not show the NWMP banner on the stock. It is documented that not all of the shipped carbines bore this stamp. Also, the stamp was very weak and often wore off. Lastly, Klancher writes that the NWMP ordered 200 butt stocks at a time, not marked, to be used as replacements as so many were damaged. It is a documented fact that this carbine was part of the 1884 Canadian order with or without the stamp. It is this writers opinion that this is its original stock. It matches the forearm perfectly but was refinished at one time as wood is just a bit shy to metal and that stamp would be no longer visible. This standard carbine does feature the listed Spanish rear sight, saddle ring and stud, round barrel with two line Winchester legend, walnut stock with steel carbine butt plate and blue finish. The nearly full length forearm wears a barrel band and a metal nose cap. CONDITON: Very good. All metal is a butter smooth patina with flashes of blue in hidden areas and on dust cover. All legends are sharp. Stocks are excellent with scattered small dings and impressions. Mechanically sound. Bore is bold with light frosting. A very nice and clean example of a factory documented NWMP shipped carbine from 1884.
