Cased Holland & Holland bolt action rifle in .244 H&H Magnum with a 24 - 1/2” barrel. Length of pull of 14” to a checkered butt. The rifle sports a Prince of Wales stock with a case color hardened trapdoor grip cap, two-stage trigger on a Mauser action, single recoil lug, gold inlaid “SAFE” on the flag safety, initialed gold oval, hooded blade front sight on a ramp, express island rear sight with one standing (250 yards) and one folding (400 yards) leaves, Nickel Marburg Supra 4x36 scope with a German #4 reticle mounted on quick detach claw style side scope mounts, rifle serial number and maker’s name on the rear scope ring, horn forend tip, a high comb beaded pancake cheek piece for a right-handed shooter, inside the bow floorplate release, case color hardened recoil lug screw, and a checkered wrist and forend. The serial number is engraved on the trigger guard while the floorplate reads “4 CARTRIDGES.” and “MADE IN ENGLAND” can be seen just ahead of the floorplate. The barrels are marked “HOLLAND’S .244 MAGNUM” and “HOLLAND & HOLLAND 13, BRUTON STREET, LONDON”. The .244 was originally developed as a wildcat cartridge by an English rifle designer named David Lloyd. Mr. Lloyd used a .375 H&H Magnum case necked down to 6 mm (.243”) and fired a 100 grain bullet at 3,500 fps. Mr. Lloyd approached H&H with the cartridge and the firm introduced it in 1955. Housed in a light brass cornered leather case with a red baize and a maker’s label. Blued barreled action and furniture. Walnut stock with some figure and fiddleback. CONDITION: This circa 1960 rifle remains in excellent original condition. Excellent chamber and bore with sharp and crisp lands. Finding high condition and original .244 H&H Magnum rifles is difficult. Such rifles are rare as the cartridge is hard on barrels, many were re-barreled or do not come with their original scope. A chance to own a high condition and original rifle in a caliber which is arguably the pinnacle of the 6mm/.240” cartridges when it comes to velocity and energy. From the collection of noted African hunter and collector Richard Cousins.
