This special order first model rifle was received at the Winchester warehouse on October 27, 1875, the shipping date and location left blank on the original factory records. Classic blued octagon barrel roll marked on the top flat with 2-line address. Dovetail blade front sight and sporting rear. Special order case hardened frame with single set trigger and mortised checkered flush thumbprint dust cover. Rifle shipped with with seldom seen deluxe, checkered birdseye maple stocks. The forend and straight grip stock appear to be fine replacements of nicely figured birdeseye maple with hand cut fore and aft checkering. The stock channel is numbered "2224" to match the "00000 2224" wood grade and assembly number marked on the lower tang. Standard tool trap crescent rifle butt plate. Included factory research confirms all options. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel retains significant portions of fading original blue with silvering along the high edges. Magazine tube has largely drifted to patina. A few flashes of case color present, the balance displaying a patterned patina. Loading gate retains the majority of its faded nitre blue. Stocks remain proud to metal with scattered impressions. Very good, bright bore with well defined rifling. Fine mechanics. Set trigger in order at the time of cataloging. A very unusual and highly desirable special order deluxe '73.
