Manufactured during the first year of production in 1910, this magnificent big bore .401 WSL rifle is the culmination of Winchester's self-loading rifle series designed by T.C. Johnson at the start of the 20th century. It features No. 9 Ulrich style factory engraving on a rich polished blue background. The left side of the receiver has a vignette depicting a bull moose in a Western landscape, flanked with blocks of foliate scroll over punch dot backgrounds and bounded by geometric and dot borders. The right side side has a central buck vignette, also flanked by blocks of foliate scroll with geometric borders. Light flourishes of scroll extend onto the breech of the barrel, which is mounted with a Marble Sheard front sight and a semi-buckhorn rear. Deluxe checkered walnut forend. Matching checkered walnut stock with pistol grip, hard rubber WRACO grip cap, and shotgun butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall. Barrel retains the majority of its factory blue with some areas of fading and cleaned oxidation spotting. Receiver retains 90% or greater lustrous blue with some scratches on the sides and freckling, especially on the top strap. Stocks are very good with scattered scratches and impressions. Fine, bright bore with crisp rifling. Fine mechanics. A very handsome and hard to find rifle.
