Circa 1869. Barrel and magazine tube have been shortened into carbine configuration with a pair of period custom engraved brass barrel bands added. Faint later style Winchester address. Fitted with a small blade front sight and military style ladder rear sight. Brass frame has been period engraved with near full coverage punch dot shaded foliates, including a Peruvian presentation on the top flat reading "ADOLFO BIRNN EN LIMA 1890". Left side features a badge shaped panel with monogram and a large vignette depicting a pair of whimsical stag prancing through a wooded landscape. Right side has vignettes of a pointer and brace of birds. Engraving continues onto the the lever and hammer. As seen on many South American 1866s, this example has been converted to centerfire. Period replacement checkered walnut carbine style forend and high comb stock with cheekpiece and engraved brass crescent tool trap butt plate. Rifle is housed in a partitioned hardwood display case with brass reinforced corners. CONDITION: Good. Barrel and magazine tube display an even chocolate patina. Brass has mellowed, pleasantly highlighting the engraving. Forend shows impressions throughout and a few chips at the nose. Stock likewise has wear and impressions. Defined bore with some darkness in the grooves. Fine mechanics. Case is very good with some scratching.
